Jackson Township reviews zoning, roadwork and more
JACKSON TOWNSHIP — Township trustees addressed zoning matters, road maintenance updates, and other issues as they concluded their May meeting schedule.
The May 20 session is documented thoroughly in the official meeting minutes, which serve as a detailed record of the township’s operational and financial decisions.
Trustees chairman Mark Wright and Trustees Kevin Alt and Randy Boyce were among those in attendance, along with township Fiscal Officer Marty Penwell.
Zoning business included approval of a lot split at 2137 Holtz Road and, separately, a new zoning permit for a relocated pole barn along Holtz Road. The property owner had originally paid for the permit in November 2024, and no additional fee was charged for the change in location of the barn.
Work also continued with GB Fabrication on a utility permit tied to a proposed sanitary sewer project discussed previously on April 1.
The zoning department also reported on discussions with the Richland County Land Bank concerning six vacant or deteriorated properties in the township.
"The trustees agreed to have (zoning inspector) J.R. (Rice) send information to the Richland County Land Bank, and the Land Bank will send out letters," the township noted in its update provided this week.
In the roads report, maintenance crews cleaned out barn gutters, ordered a load of grit, and patched a sinkhole on Stiving Road. Seasonal ditch and cemetery mowing has begun, and moss treatment was applied at Myers Cemetery. Equipment work included hydro pump installation on the flail mower and maintenance on the township’s 6430 tractor hydraulics.
All special reports were approved as presented.
During the public input portion of the meeting, a local resident updated trustees on cleanup efforts at his Holtz Road property. He said he would like to have the land surveyed to determine exact property lines and asked about installing a shed and a blow-up swimming pool for his children and information on fencing.
Involving the shed, zoning staff explained that a zoning permit -- and possibly a building permit -- may be required depending on the shed’s size.
Another couple was also present and addressed concerns related to a property on Stiving Road mentioned earlier in the zoning report.
Later in the session, trustees approved revisions to Resolution 2025-12. The updated policy allows officials to authorize up to $2,000 per transaction per project and township employees up to $750 per project. This represents the final version of the resolution, which was revised due to rising costs of items. The measure passed unanimously by roll call vote.
No old business or correspondence was presented.
The board also approved minutes from the May 6 meeting, accepted financial reports, and authorized Purchase Order 58 and vouchers numbered 23367 through 23376.
