Senior citizen, dog die in Bucyrus house fire
BUCYRUS — A 78-year-old man and a dog died Thursday in a house fire on West Mansfield Street, the Bucyrus City Fire Department reports.
Crews were dispatched at 8:51 a.m. on March 27 to 610 W. Mansfield St., where firefighters found flames in portions of a two-story residential building, a report provided Friday shows.
"Medic 12 crew packed up and did a knockdown of the porch and side of the house before making entry through the only door to the house," the report shows. "The kitchen was fully involved, which was extinguished by the crew, then they advanced into the rest while searching for any victims."
During a secondary search, crews located the man near a bedroom door. He was carried out through a window, CPR was performed, and he was transported to Bucyrus Community Hospital. Release of him name is pending.
Bucyrus fire personnel called for a second alarm and received mutual aid from Holmes Township, Galion, Liberty Township and Lykens Township departments.
"Fire was quickly knocked down, but extension got into the roof of the kitchen, which was on the first floor," Bucyrus Fire reports.
Roughly 400 feet of supply line was laid to the nearest hydrant. Electric and gas utilities were disconnected at the scene.
The report lists the fire’s origin as in the cooking area of the kitchen but states the cause remains undetermined. The fire department requested the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office to investigate.
Estimated property damage was listed at $68,000, with $10,000 in contents. No firefighter injuries were reported.
The dog that died was in the upstairs bedroom. The dog that survived had been tied up outside and was given to neighbors.
