Shelby City Councilman Eric Cutlip reported several updates and upcoming community events during a July 7 update from the council’s Community and Economic Development Committee.
Cutlip, who leads the committee, announced that businessman Karl Milliron has purchased the former bank building downtown for redevelopment. “We are very excited about that,” Cutlip said, calling this "big news for economic development."
In addition, four facade grants have been approved, funding projects from roofing and signage to concrete upgrades.
The committee also reported on the early stages of exploring a tax increment financing (TIF) district to support downtown Shelby revitalization efforts, Cutlip said.
"It would allow us to save some tax monies and put them into a fund and use for downtown revitalization," he said. "But we are just getting into the early stages of that."
More is to follow.

A grant project related to the Shaw building in downtown Shelby is expected to conclude next month, with further updates anticipated, Cutlip said.

On the community front, Cutlip highlighted several upcoming events. Shelby Bicycle Days are July 11-12, featuring a range of activities and Saturday night fireworks. "A ton of stuff is going on," Cutlip said.

Cutlip also noted that the Marvin Memorial Library “always has a ton of stuff going on,” and highlighted its End of Summer Reading Block Party and Cruise-In.
This special event is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on July 18 and includes a car show.
"Everyone is welcome," Marvin Memorial Library director Vikki Ritchie said. "We'll have cars, music, games, there will be door prizes, and we'll also have a magician."
