Shelby’s historic 1872 firehouse may soon find new life under private ownership as the city outlines a plan to market the building through the Shelby Community Improvement Corporation (CIC).
The effort, discussed by city officials Monday, Nov. 18, aims to ensure responsible stewardship while benefiting the city’s broader goals.
“This has been a successful formula for us in the past,” Mayor Steve Schag said, referencing similar CIC-led efforts. “It’s worked in ways that were advantageous to all parties involved.”
Except for serving as a storage site for equipment, the firehouse has been unused since 2022, following its vacancy by a private ambulance service. Previously, the Shelby Fire Department operated out of the building until relocating to a modern facility on High School Avenue in 2018.
Earlier this fall, Councilman Nathan Martin had pressed Mayor Schag for a more definitive use other than for storage.
On Monday, the mayor emphasized that the city administration is committed to placing the property under the care of qualified owners.
“The city administration, in cooperation with this council, will do its best to see that the building and property are placed under qualified and responsible ownership,” Schag stated.

On Monday, Schag requested the clerk of council to keep the firehouse project on the city council agenda under unfinished business.
This move ensures that discussions about the property remain active until a resolution is reached.
"Details of this transaction and appropriate legislation will be brought to council in the near future," Schag also said.
The municipal government administration plans to introduce details of the proposed transaction and necessary legislation to the council.
Ahead of Schag's announcement, an effort was underway involving city leaders, including economic development manager Jessica Gribben and project coordinator Joe Gies, to develop a plan for the property’s future use.
While specific proposals have yet to be finalized, Schag’s remarks show an interest in leveraging the CIC’s expertise.
The firehouse dates back more than 150 years and is a landmark location in downtown Shelby along Main Street.
The Community Improvement Corporation of Shelby (CIC) has been a leader with multiple projects in the city, including the transformation of Black Fork Commons in downtown and related downtown revitalization efforts.
CIC also is the parent organization of Shelby Bicycle Days, a community festival focused on bringing families together in downtown Shelby, its website notes.
