FCCLA students make presentation to Shelby School Board
Shelby students with the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) made a special presentation at Monday's Board of Education meeting.
The students reviewed the recent 2024-25 school year at Shelby schools with many accomplishments through multiple projects and looked toward upcoming goals and projects for the 2025-26 academic year.
Guest speakers were FCCLA student leadership team members Sophie Penn and Olivia Byrd.
Student group members are headed toward an Orlando leadership conference later this summer.
Shelby school board president Scott Rose thanked the group, including for its involvement in a veterans night.
School board vice president Kim Nadolsky noted the value of a recent survey by the FCCLA involving student needs and preferences.

Old Shelby firehouse legislation moves forward
Shelby City Council members voted on and approved the third reading of Ordinance 11-2025, which would authorize the sale of city-owned real estate -- the old Shelby firehouse that officials hope can be revitalized under private ownership.
The city would need to sign off on any plans once a new owner is found.
The measure also designates the Community Improvement Corporation of Shelby as the city's agent for the proposed eventual transaction.
The proposed ordinance states: "The city reserves the right to review any and all submissions for purchase to the CIC; and further reserves the right to reject any offer submitted."
The vote was 4-0 on Monday with no further discussions. This followed the legislation being reviewed at two other meetings and discussed at length.
Council held a first reading on Ordinance 15-2025, a proposed charter amendment to Section 53. If approved in subsequent readings, the change would be submitted to voters for ratification, the report shows.
This was earlier postponed. It involves the filing deadline for Shelby local elections and moving up the timeframe by 15 days (90 to 75). Council is being asked to send the matter to voters to decide. Passage of such legislation by the council is needed first. The first reading vote was 4-0 after hearing from Director Matt Fingeld and Deputy Director Jane Zimmermann of the Richland County Board of Elections.

Vehicle crashes into tree, killing driver, 20 in Crawford County
CRAWFORD COUNTY -- A car crashed into a tree on Sunday, killing a 20-year-old motorist, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office reports.
The victim was identified as Constantinos Charles Chavatzas of Bucyrus, authorities said in an update on Monday.
The crash was reported about 3:31 p.m. Sunday along Knauss Road north of State Route 294.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Chavatzas was traveling northbound on Knauss Road in a black 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage when the vehicle went off the west side of the roadway and continued northbound until it struck a tree, the sheriff's office said.
The vehicle came to rest sitting, partially on the pavement on the east side of Knauss Road facing north.
The investigation is continuing.
The sheriff's office was assisted by the Bucyrus Fire Department, Dallas Township Fire Department, the Crawford County Coroner’s Office and Hensley’s Towing.
