The Shelby Board of Education is set to meet Thursday, Feb. 20, in a special session to vote on approval for a bid for a new roof at the former Shelby Middle School that’s now serving as an administrative building and gymnasium for young Whippet athletes.
That structure -- also a former home to Shelby High School -- is now the headquarters for school administration/school board and the competition gym for middle school sports, for example.
A new roof for the building has been a priority for the district for several months since the roof is deteriorating and a leak, among other things, could damage the gym floor.

Students moved nearby to the new pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school in 2022. The former middle school was then converted to administrative use along with the student-athletes' continued use of the gym.
The special school meeting is set for 5:45 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Shelby High School, conference room, 1 Whippet Way, the district said in an announcement.
Preliminary information from the district indicated it had received five bids for the new roof that's been described as a key project by Shelby Schools Superintendent Michael Browning and School Board President Scott Rose.

The Shelby district is working with David Conley, representing Rock Mill Financial, as the financial consultant-adviser to the district on developing a funding plan.
Also planned at the meeting is an executive session, as provided under state open meetings provisions, for the purpose of employment of school employees or regulated individuals, the district said in its update.
