Mayor Steve Schag describes Monday as “truly a historic day” for the city of Shelby, underscoring major economic development projects that unfolded just hours apart on Monday.

In remarks delivered during the Shelby City Council meeting on Monday evening, Schag spoke of the simultaneous grand openings of Mickey’s and an adjoining Dunkin’ Donuts on Mansfield Avenue, plus a separate redevelopment project in the downtown area.
“A rather impressive structure,” Schag said of the new complex, noting the enthusiasm at the event and the building’s standout design. “It is so cool on the inside,” he added.
The site is also set to expand later this year with a Dino-World Adventure feature.
“There was already a good number of folks, not only at the ribbon cutting and the grand opening, but there were folks that were there getting a firsthand view of all the selections inside the building,” Schag said.
He publicly thanked The Coles Group for their investment in Shelby through the Mickey's/Dunkin' project.
DOWNTOWN SHELBY PROJECT
That same afternoon, officials marked the start of demolition at the corner of Broadway and Main Street, where deteriorated buildings are being cleared. The site, formerly home to an early 20th-century automobile dealership, is being transformed under a land bank project into green space suitable for future development.

“This is part of a land bank project,” Schag said, citing key contributions from project coordinator Joe Gies and economic development director Jessica Gribben.
“They worked very, very hard to put all the pieces together in a public-private partnership,” Schag told the council.
Schag emphasized that the cleared site would soon be “shovel-ready greenspace” and available for further development in Shelby. “So that’s a great thing,” he said. “We want to thank everyone involved in that.”
Reflecting on the dual milestones, Schag said: “I think that’s the first time we’ve had two events like that -- two major events on the same day. So it was truly a red-letter day.”
