Awaiting update on opening date for Seltzer pool
Patrons of Seltzer municipal swimming pool in Shelby are awaiting word of a new opening date for the 2025 season.
Cool temperatures had initially delayed the start of the season. As part of a social media post on Saturday, the pool reported it was awaiting "more information on successful repairs and our opening date."
"We want to be open as bad as everyone wants us to be!!" the post said. "We will update all pool patrons as soon as we are able to."
The nature of the repairs was not specified and questions were referred to park system management and a City Hall official. A telephone message was left Saturday for Shelby Parks Superintendent Jerry Marshall. A separate information request was made to the Shelby City Hall official earlier in the week. An update was pending.
Earlier in May, the swimming pool appeared full in preparation for the season. Less than a week later, however, a visit to the site on May 25 showed the pool was empty. That same day, the pool's Facebook page mentioned "an unforeseen pool issue."
Recent cool weather had already pushed back a hoped-for May 24 opening date. The pool has previously reported that outdoor temperatures must be above 70 to open. Temperatures on Saturday only reached a high of about 60.
As of Saturday, the Shelby weather forecast had called for temperatures to be near 67 on Sunday, 78 on Monday and rise to near 87 on Wednesday.
Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

OHIO
1 bicyclist killed, another injured in NW Ohio car crash
PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a passenger car and two bicyclists in Providence Township in western Lucas County, authorities reported Saturday.
One of the bicyclists, Roseann Marie Peiffer, 38, Maumee, was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.
Another bicyclist, Gustav Caillaux Casalino Perez Velazco, 50, of Maumee, was transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, the patrol said.
A third bicyclist was not struck.
The crash occurred on South River Road near Yawberg Road at 9:44 a.m. Saturday.
The preliminary investigation, the patrol said, found that:
-- the three bicyclists were riding east on South River Road on the edge line on the south side of the roadway.
-- A 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 was traveling west on S. River Road when it drove left of center, striking two of the bicyclists and driving off the south side of the roadway.
-- The Mercedes-Benz re-entered the roadway, where it came to rest.
The Mercedes-Benz was driven by an 18-year-old from Grand Rapids, Ohio, the patrol said. He was checked on scene by EMS personnel for non-life-threatening injuries.
All the bicyclists were wearing helmets.
The crash remains under investigation by troopers at the Toledo post.
The patrol was assisted by the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office, the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, Providence Township Fire & EMS, and Brett’s Towing.
