Strong storms powered through the region on Tuesday evening, prompting a series of storm warnings, including for a possible tornado reported in northeastern Wayne County and southeastern Medina County.
About 40 minutes earlier, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for northern Richland County and Huron County.
"Severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Norwalk to 8 miles west of New London to Bloomville, moving east at 45 mph," the weather service reported.
Gusts of 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters were reported.
Storms were severe across a widespread area.
"Currently, about 57,000 customers are without power," AEP Ohio said in a social media post late Tuesday. "The hardest-hit areas include Steubenville, Coshocton and New Philadelphia, as well as Canton, but crews are seeing widespread damage across the AEP Ohio service territory."
Storm damage reports will continue to be compiled on Wednesday, along with any official determinations about tornadoes in Ohio.

The grand opening is nearing for the much-anticipated Mickey Mart/Dunkin’ project off Mansfield Avenue near Lamplighter Lane in Shelby.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 10:30 a.m. May 5, Shelby economic development director Jessica Gribben announced this week.
"The new store is unlike any you’ve seen in this area," Gribben previewed in her Municipal Momentum newsletter. "It features a beautiful, soaring glass exterior and a bright, open interior."
"There are abundant food options, including Mickey’s Chicken & Deli, fully stocked snacks and coolers, and a full-service Dunkin’," she added.
The "large fueling stations offer easy-in, easy-out access for both cars and trucks," Gribben said of the site that's in the area of the former Skarl Motors.
