Shelby teen motorcyclist's action averts crash
A Shelby teenager on a motorcycle took evasive action, which prevented a crash May 30 with a vehicle at the Smiley and Broadway intersection, resulting in a suspected minor injury to him.
"To avoid a collision, the Kawasaki braked, causing him to lose control, laying the motorcycle down," the recently released Shelby police traffic crash report states. The teen was wearing a helmet.
The motorcycle was traveling 40 mph at the time, per the report.
Other details from the report indicate that on the evening of May 30:
-- A Chevrolet, traveling eastbound on Smiley, approached the intersection with a red light.
-- A 2009 Kawasaki EX250, operated by the 17-year-old and traveling southbound on Broadway, approached and entered the intersection, having the right of way.
-- The Chevrolet then made and completed a right-hand turn onto Broadway.
The Kawasaki sustained functional damage in the crash that occurred about 7:12 p.m.
The Chevrolet left the scene, and its 78-year-old driver was later issued a right-of-way citation, the report shows.
The report does not specify how long it took for police to locate the Ontario area Chevy driver or how they identified that 2025 vehicle, which was not damaged.
The posted speed in the area is 35 mph, the report shows.

2 vehicles overturn, 1 of them strikes tree in Sandusky County crash
SANDUSKY COUNTY -- Two vehicles overturned and one struck a tree in a crash Saturday along U.S. 20 near County Road 128 in Sandusky Township, where two motorists were hurt, one seriously, authorities reported.
Trevor Burkholder, 42, of Warren, was transported to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo with serious injuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
About 1:26 p.m., he was driving a 2016 Honda Civic eastbound on U.S. 20 in the left lane and moved into the right lane before driving off the right side of the roadway, the patrol said.
The Civic traveled back onto the roadway before striking from behind a 2021 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by Joshua Brink, 47, of Fremont, who was eastbound on U.S. 20 in the right lane, the patrol said.
After being struck, the Tacoma crossed into the westbound lanes of U.S. 20 before overturning.
The Civic continued eastbound before driving off the right side of the roadway for a second time, where it struck the tree and overturned, the patrol said.
The pickup driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, the patrol said.
Both men were wearing seat belts.
The crash remains under investigation by the patrol's Sandusky post.
The patrol was assisted by the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandusky Township Fire Department.
