Bad timing for Shelby splash pad | Record temp for date | Whippets update | Shelby community dinner | 1 obituary | more

As a heat wave continues — including a record high for the day on Monday in the area — efforts are underway by the city of Shelby to get the new splash pad up and running again at Black Fork Commons in downtown.
“Sometime over the winter, there developed a leak in the system,” reports Joe Gies, city of Shelby project coordinator. “We are working with the contractor to identify the leak and get it fixed.”

Shelby's Board of Park Commissioners was informed about the situation at its monthly meeting on June 9 by Shelby Parks Superintendent Jerry Marshall.
On Monday, Gies said that the city is not sure when the splash pad will be back up.
It's unclear how much the work will cost.
“Until we pinpoint the leak and identify the problem, we do not have a cost estimate or know if it is under warranty,” Gies said.
The Shelby splash pad also ran into issues in 2024 but reopened in July of last year.
Superintendent Marshall noted earlier this year that 2025 marked the first season that park system staff had fully prepared it for use after a winter.
For those looking to cool off, the Seltzer municipal pool is open. Its 2025 opening was delayed first by cool weather and then by another 11 days by a hole in the pool that was repaired.

RECORD HEAT
Heat advisory continues
A heat advisory is in place for a widespread region, including Shelby, until 8 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said, also reporting a record high for the date of 92 on June 23 in Mansfield.
That breaks a 61-year-old record for June 23. The weather service office in Cleveland reported the record at 5:18 p.m. Monday. Mansfield is the closest official measuring point to Shelby.
