Storms follow another day of record heat in Shelby area
Strong thunderstorms fired up Tuesday evening, hours into a day that brought record-tying heat to the Shelby region.
That prompted a special statement by the National Weather Service at 8:46 p.m. for areas that included Shelby, Mansfield, Ontario, Plymouth, New Washington, Chatfield, Tiro, and Sulphur Springs.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph were reported along with a strong thunderstorm over New Washington, or 10 miles northeast of Bucyrus, moving east at 20 mph, the weather service said.
Later Tuesday night, a severe thunderstorm warning included the New London area.
The storm was accompanied by 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail, the weather service said.
Earlier in the day, the high temperature reached 93 in Mansfield, tying a record for the date set in 1933. Mansfield is the closest official weather measuring point to Shelby.
A peak power alert was issued for the city of Shelby. "Please reduce electric consumption 12 p.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday," the municipal government reported.
Shelby’s "Last Tuesday Concert" at Black Fork Commons Plaza was cancelled "due to the excessive heat," Shelby's Community Improvement Corporation reported.
On Monday, Mansfield hit a record high of 92 degrees, breaking a 61-year-old mark for June 23.

Roof project on Shelby schools campus
With Shelby schools on summer break, campus improvement projects are underway.
They include a roof replacement project for the building housing the Shelby Board of Education/school administration.
Here is a look at some of the work as shown in photos this past week, prior to the heat wave moving into the Shelby area.

In February, the Shelby school board approved the project, which involved extensive planning.
The base bid is valued at $1,076,943 for the main part of the building with an alternate bid of $131,628, which involves the portion of the building over the competition gymnasium used by young middle school athletes.
The project involves replacing both the main roof and the gym roof.
Officials have noted that if the competition gym floor were to get wet because of a failing roof, that would result in a significant problem.
The building, at 109 W. Smiley Ave., was the home of both the former Shelby Middle School and Shelby High School.
On June 16, the Shelby Board of Education approved change orders for the project due to unexpected issues once the project got going.
"There are two change orders for the roof project," Shelby Schools Superintendent Michael Browning detailed. "The first is metal wall panels in the gym at the cost of $44,431.20. The second was discovered after (work) started — that new blocking was required. This is at a cost of $62,636.20."
